Eigentlich ist Caglio immer Ende März, aber dieses Jahr lag einfach zu viel Schnee. Daher wurde es um 2 Wochen auf den 6./7. April verschoben. Ueli konnte nicht kommen und so holte mich Walti Frei am Samstag um 7 Uhr ab. In seinem Renault Espace war bereits die BSA verstaut. Meine Honda TL 250 passte mit vorderem Garettenrad perfekt dazu rein. Nach dem Gotthardtunnel begrüsste uns die Sonne. Ja, richtig gelesen: S o n n e. An der Grenze wurden wir durchgewunken und so waren wir bereits gegen 11h in Caglio. Beim Einschreiben begrüssten wir viele bekannte Gesichter und freuten uns auf den Start bei warmem Wetter. In der Ferne waren die Berge allerdings schneebedeckt.

Dieses Jahr hatte es nur halb so viele Starter. Krise oder verschobener Termin? Auch der Tross aus Österreich mit Alfred, Joe und Hartwig fehlte. Egal, Walti und ich machten uns um 12.30h auf die Strecke mit 17 Zonas. Ich hatte in der höchsten Klasse grün gelöst, was sich aber als gut fahrbar herausstellte. Kein Sturz und keine 5 ergaben am Abend dann 17 Punkte. Walti schaffte in der Pre65 Spur 4 Dabs. Respekt. Trotz lädierter Schulter fuhr er sehr sicher und bollerte mit seiner BSA durch die Sektionen, sehr zur Freude der Zuschauer. Die Runde war abgeändert, weil es oben zu nass war und Schnee lag. Am Abend um 16h hatten wir 22 km abgespult und waren happy.

Nach Pflege von Mann und Maschine hatte uns der Hotelier Stefano einen Tisch für 10 Trialisti gedeckt. Wir verbrachten einen tollen Abend mit den italienischen Amici. Ich hatte noch Ranglisten von Trial-WM-Läufen aus 1977 (mit Ibergeregg) und 1978 dabei, wo auch Walti Frei auf Plätzen 35 herum aufgeführt war. Tempi passati, aber respektvoll wurde Walti dazu gratuliert. Auch hatte er Fotoalben seiner Karriere dabei, was natürlich viel Diskussions-Stoff ergab. Müde verzogen wir uns gegen Mitternacht in die Heia und träumten von Wäldern, Sektionen, Schnee und Regen. Ja, die Meteo hatte nämlich für Sonntag welchen angedroht, aber es hatte in der Nacht so fest niedergeprasselt, dass am Morgen nichts mehr übrig hatte.

So machten wir uns nach dem Frühstück mit vollgetankter Maschine auf zum Start. Giuseppe konnte seine schöne SWM auch wieder reparieren und zufrieden an einer Toscanelli Zigarillo ziehen. Da waren viele schöne Motos beim Start: Guzzi, Parilla, SWM, Honda und auch Andy Nauli von Graubünden. Wir waren bei den ersten Startern und schauten die ersten Sektionen nicht so genau an, was bei mir zu einem verpassten Tor führte. Dafür waren wir jetzt weit vorne und hatten kaum mehr zu warten. Es war schon schmieriger geworden und man musste mit viel Drehmoment und Schwung in den Waldsektionen fahren. 4-Stroke mässig eben. Die Hälfte der Sektionen war in Bächen und man fühlte sich wie zu alten Zeiten. Das Wetter war kälter, so 12 Grad, aber es blieb trocken. Um 14.30h waren wir bereits fertig, 32km abgespuhlt, Sandwich und Vino beim Pausenstopp genossen und ein paar Schneedurchfahrten gemeistert. Wir spritzten im Hotelhof die Töffs ab und fuhren zum Trocknen in die nahe Pizzeria, wo uns gerade noch eine Pizza gereicht wurde. Mmh, ein toller Abschluss. Walti erhielt bei der Preisverleihung einen Pokal für den 2. Rang und ich einen Gasgriff für den 5. Rangm auf welchen Walti fast neidisch wurde. Nach 50 Minuten im Gotthardstau kamen wir gegen 21h in Zürich an, müde aber glücklich, mit vielen Andenken über ein tolles Weekend.

No matter, Walti and I set to 12:30 on the track with 17 Zonas. I had inscribed for the green, the highest class, but this turned out to be rideable. No crash and no 5 gave at the evening 17 points. Walti managed in the Pre65 lane 4 Dabs. Respect. Despite lesioned shoulder he drove very safely and thumped with his BSA through the sections, much to the delight of the audience. The round was changed because it was too wet and snow was lying in  the mountains. In the evening at 16h we had done 22 km and were happy.
After care of man and machine, the owner of the hotel Stefano had set a table for 10 Trialisti. We spent a great evening with the Italian Amici. I had rankings of Trial World Championship events from 1977 (with Swiss round at Ibergeregg) and in 1978 Walti was listed around 35th rankings at some world rounds. Tempi passati, but respectfully Walti was congratulated. He also had  brought photo albums of his career, which of course resulted in much discussion material. Tired we went around midnight to sleep and dreamed of forests, sections, snow and rain. Yes, the Meteo  had in fact been threatened rain for Sunday, but it had rained down so hard at night that nothing was left in the morning.

So we went after breakfast with fully fueled machine to start. Giuseppe could repair his lovely SWM and happily smoke a Toscanelli cigarillo. There were many beautiful Motos at the start: Guzzi, Parilla, SWM, Honda and even Andy Nauli of Graubünden. We were among the first starters and watched the first sections not so accurately, leading to a missed gate and a 5 for me. Instead, we were now far ahead and had little more to wait. It had already become greasy and you had to take a lot of torque and momentum in the forest sections. 4-Stroke comparatively flat. Half of the sections were in streams and it felt like old times. The weather was colder, so 12 degrees, but it stayed dry. At 14.30 we were already finished, done 32km, enjoyed the sandwich and wine stop and mastered a few snow crossings. We cleaned in the hotel courtyard our motorbikes and drove out to dry them in the nearby pizzeria where we just had the last pizza served. Mmm, a great ending. Walti received a trophy at the awards ceremony for the 2nd rank and I got a Domino throttle for 5th, on which Walti was almost jealous. After 50 minutes traffic jam before the St. Gotthard tunnel, we arrived at 21h in Zurich, tired but happy, with lots of memory on a great weekend.
