Old trial cup Caglio 2019
13/14 April
According to tradition we, i.e. Walter & Patrick Frei, are starting the Twinshock season with the Trial Caglio. Unfortunately, Ueli had to cancel at the last moment, but he discovered a great new Osteria for us. I was happy that Felix Büeler and his Bultaco were motivated to join us. Saturday 13 April at 7h was departure in Zurich. Unfortunately, we lost one hour before the Gotthard and Chiasso also was busy. But we didn't have to wait in line, because we had to stamp the carnet de passage. Felix had the smoother route via San Bernardino. As always it is nice to welcome old and new trial fans on their oldtimers. There were also 2 legends, one Jaime Subira with a tuned Fantic 240. The weather today was dry and handy, about 12 degrees, so with a light wind jacket. At 14h we rolled onto the start ramp and then we went on to the mountain forest course.

The first sections were rather easy, mostly with zero possible. Felix and I drove in the middle yellow track, together with the Montesa man Florian from Garmisch. It was a pleasure and we spurred each other on to top performances. A clique of young riders on Papas Twinshockern was great to watch. Wow, what they jumped on their Bultacos and SWMs in the heavy track, great. Some days later we found out, that there was a European champ 2 contender around place 10 among them. Until section 10 I had only lost 4 points, but the exuberance was increasingly contained, because steeper and steeper steps were served. In the last sections I was able to shake hands with the second legend: Trials World Champion 1976-78 Yrö Vesterinen on BSA Bantam x-light. It's great to see Yrö at retirement age still driving zero in the yellow lane!

At 18h we were exhausted, but happy and enjoyed a beer at the bar at the village center. After the shower, our team of four were served a great dinner in an Osteria. Back in the hotel another a few beers and Waltis Kirsch Schnaps, which brought then even the strongest trials rider (Bulto Felix) in the bed.
Sunday 14 Aprile
Sunday morning 8h, shutters up and...snow, well, not down here, but up on the mountains. Whoa, it was cold too, so put on warm rain clothes. At 10h we could still start dry, but it started to grumble. The first few sections were well drivable, in spite of slippery ground, so they were humane. It was fun despite the rain. However, a few sections were taken over unchanged from Saturday, which transformed into a muddy slide. Nevertheless, we fought our way through, partly with inventive track selection.

Tolle Ambiente, Viva Italia!
In the middle, there was a break with hot tea and panetone (also wine...). Well strengthened we tackled the last stone sections. Mostly we came through with 3 feet, but when left the ideal line, then the 5 mark was unevitable. Unfortunately Walti made another bump in the beautiful BSA tank, the other 3 musketeers (Felix, Pat, Florian) completed the trial with more feet, but without damage. At about 15h a meal was served at the start and we made our way home satisfied, this time without traffic jam. Great ambience, (translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator)
